BELPERS NEWEST RESTAURANT

Belper

The Chef

The Loft is located in the historic market town of Belper, towards the top of King Street, above Motostop and next door but one to the Ritz Cinema. Formerly used as an office, the light and breezy yet cozy and intimate first floor room offered a perfect pairing for the opportunity of an upmarket bistro style restaurant in an 18th Century building.

Months of planning, designing and development finally lead to The Loft restaurant opening its doors in late November 2016.

Craig Tyrrell, Head Chef and owner, who was born in Belpers own Babington hospital, uses locally sourced ingredients wherever possible in his traditional British dishes, served in a modern style, for his continuously updating menus.

Belper is a town located in Derbyshire, England on the River Derwent.

The town's name is thought to have been adopted from an old hunting lodge, Beaurepaire, meaning beautiful retreat.

Originally associated with the nail making industry since the 13th Century, Belper expanded greatly during the early Industrial Revolution.

Jedediah Strutt and Richard Arkwright transformed Belper into a leading mill town when they built one of the first water powered cotton mills in the late 18th Century.

The East Mill was constructed in the early 20th Century where it remains today, although it no longer produces textiles.

Because of Belper's rich history, it now forms part of the Derwent Valley Mills World Heritage Site.

Craig knew he wanted to become a Chef when helping out in his Mothers pub kitchen at the early age of thirteen. He joined the Lion, Belper in his early teens learning how to be a waiter and chef before later spending two years in Spain.

Here Craig developed his culinary skills, learning new dishes, a new language and new life lessons he would take back with him to the U.K. When returning home Craig found employment with Breadsall Priory Marriott Hotel, starting off in the pastry kitchen before working his way up to Sous Chef three years on.

Craig gained his first AA rosette as Head Chef at the Three Queens Hotel, Burton-on-Trent and then his second at Hellaby Hall, South Yorkshire.

He spent over seven years as Head Chef in reputable establishments such as Kedleston Country House before embarking on his first adventure as proprietor and Head Chef at The Loft Restaurant in Belper .

Craig hopes to bring his years of experience, passion and knowledge into his home town and offer something a little different for his diners.

We hope to see you at The Loft soon!
